A breast cancer diagnosis can turn your world upside down. Endless doctor appointments. Scans. Prescriptions. More scans. Talking to your doctor. Talking to your friends and family about what your doctor said. No wonder we lose ourselves in this grueling process.

I’m here to tell you why it’s so important to put yourself first, to put self-care on the top of your list. If you take extra good care of yourself, it won’t make the breast cancer go away. However, it will give you a sense of calm and happiness that will help you get through it all. Plus, if you’re happier, then chances are the people around you will be happier too. It’s kind of contagious, if you know what I mean.

So here it goes, a list of things that you can do to nurture yourself. I’m not saying you need to do all these things. But even just one of them each day is sort of like giving yourself a great, big hug. And who’s better than you for that?!?!?

1. Meditation This is on the top of the list. You know why? Because it’s the easiest and most effective way to bring yourself to a peaceful place when everything is... well, not so peaceful. You can do it anywhere. And you don’t need to meditate for hours to reap its benefits. Just 5-10 minutes can be a game changer. There are tons of free guided meditation apps. Play around with them and see which one resonates with you. Or, simply sit on a cushion in a quiet, dimly lit room. Light a candle. Apply lavender oil to your pulse points. Close your eyes and allow your mind to drift. Meditation is also a great way to fall asleep, give it a try!

2. Take A Walk I know it sounds so simple, but movement is so essential to clearing your mind. A wonderful way to destress. Whether you take your dog for a quick spin around the corner or invite a friend to chat with you along the way, just get out there! And if the weather is bad, head to your local mall and stroll around. Sometimes you just need to move.

3. Indulge in A Bath There is nothing like slipping into a warm bubble bath. And you don’t have to wait till the end of the day to do it, either! If you’re home and not having a good day, fill the tub with warm water and your favorite bubble bath or bath salts. Dim the lights. Light a lightly scented candle. Play some spa music on your phone. Boom! Instant mini-vacation. A great time to close your eyes and let your mind wander. And just... be.

4. Read A Great Book Whether you need a good laugh, a suspenseful mystery, or a good old-fashioned love story… diving into a great book is the ultimate escape. Go to your local library, grab something that resonates with you, curl up with a cup of herbal tea and just dive in and enjoy.

Wouldn't it be AMAZING to do all these things every day? Sure! But it’s not realistic. Choose one each day as a treat to yourself. A way to nurture your soul and maintain peace and happiness, no matter what you’re going through.
